Malawi: Tubepoka Development Initiative (TDI) has drilled a borehole at Ngatele village in Senior Chief Mwabulambya’s area. The traditional authorityissituated in the Chitipa district
The aim of digging the borehole in the Traditional Authority to ensure that communities have access to clean and safe water in the area. The borehole has been drilled with an investment of K12 Million.
The members of the community have come forward to express their appreciation towards TDI for this initiative. The programme seeks to ensure the safety of he communities living in and around Ngatele village.
The borehole will help in making sure that the families do not face issues such as cholera and diarrhoea
Speaking during the handover ceremony on Tuesday, TDI’s board chairperson, Island Mtambo said the intervention follows increased cases of waterborne diseases in the area owing to lack of access to clean and safe water.
“We believe the borehole will help transform the community as people will have improved access to safe and clean water and will also enhance opportunities for infrastructure development,” Mtambo said.
He women and girls used to travel to travel long distances to fetch water from unprotected sources. The borehole will address that issue and help communities transform.
Lolass Nyondo of Ngatele Village has expressed his satisfaction with the drilling of the borehole. The woman is a resident of Ngatele village and a beneficiary for the borehole. She believes it will help reduce challenges such as water borne diseases in her community.
“We used to fetch water from unprotected sources shared with domesticated and wild animals making it unhealthy and unreliable. We are thankful for having one,” she added.
She said that shortage of clean drinking water is a major concern, as such it is the responsibility of the administration to drill more boreholes. Administration confirmed that the borehole will serve 374 community members and address community’s water challeges.
Tubepoka Development Initiative has reached out to support development in the village communities on several previous occasions since 2012.
