Uganda has submitted a bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2038. The country will co-host the 2027 AFCON, after co-hosting the 2024 CHAN (African Nations Championship). The country has also submitted a bid to host the 2031 African Games.
Reportedly, this ambitious vision of Uganda for global sports hosting took a bold step forward recently, as government officials signalled intentions to pursue a bid for the FIFA World Cup, building on the momentum from securing co-hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports – Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, during her appearance before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The session focused on scrutinizing the December 2025 Auditor General’s report, but discussions veered into broader infrastructure plans and long-term sports ambitions.
Dr. Turyagyenda emphasised upon the strategic importance of ongoing stadium developments. She noted that Uganda is prioritising facilities capable of meeting international standards. She further highlighted plans for multiple stadia with substantial capacities targeting over 45,000 seats in some cases, which is essential for future major events.

She further stated that eventually, they should bid for it, if they are given a World Cup, then they also have stadia to run. “The next bid is in 2031, for the World Cup and I think we are already thinking about it because we are now going to have at least three stadia that we think can be looked at,” added Dr. Turyagyenda.
Uganda has savoured the aroma of hosting major sports tournaments and is already hungry for more. The Government said that the FIFA World Cup, could be the next feast in Kampala’s grand sports “kitchen” with preparations underway to make a credible bid for 2038 or later editions.
Permanent Secretary Turyagyenda also stated that the big plan of infrastructure development is to develop stadia in other regions, and she thinks that they will keep pushing for what they have just mentioned, that they now get bigger stadia, with capacity of 45,000 [or more]. She exclaimed that they are preparing the kitchen before cooking the main feast.
