Zambia: Famous writer from Conde Nast Traveller – Vivienne Dovi visited Zambia for a familiarisation tour courtesy of Zambia Tourism Agency. The recent visit by the travel writer showcased her efforts over destination Zambia to international markets.
During her stay, she enjoyed exploring micro-lighting at Batoka Sky and visited the Royal Livingstone. She also explored the Victoria Falls where she tried the most visited gorge swing.
Gorge Swing in Zambia is an exciting and mind-blowing experience. Discovering the wild horizons, leap into the wide-open air as one plunge into the mouth of the Batoka gorge, Victoria Falls.
The adventurous sport is the world’s first known commercial high wire. The cable that spans the gorge is of 135 metres or 443 feet long and is 75m or 246ft above the ground.
While enjoying the Gorge Swing, a full-body harness is attached securely from the back to the cable, by allowing the person to take a running dive off, from the edge of the cliff and soar across the deep gorge, swinging like a bird in flight.
At Gorge, after several pendulum swings, the person is lowered to the ground where he or she can take a track back up to the top of the gorge. This can also be done as a tandem, along with another person.
Here, people can also purchase the DVD or photos of their jump at the gorge, once they have finished.
The ‘flying fox’ is a cable slide across the gorge and instead of jumping off into thin air, one slide or ‘fly’ across the gorge which is attached to a special harness before being pulled back in again.
If you want to try a change from the more traditional abseiling, then the one can also try to experience the rap jumping, where people descend the rock face, while facing the ground and keep pushing off from the rock face as they head towards the bottom of the gorge.
