South Africa: A primary school educator was robbed by a scammer who identified himself as a medical Doctor.
The female contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) this afternoon (Sunday) requesting assistance. She explained that in October 2022, she met the man while shopping in Ballito – KZN. They struck up a conversation during which he identified himself as a medical Doctor. They exchanged contact details and chatted on WhatsApp since.
During their conversations, he informed her that he was in search of a part time employee. The work from home position entailed data capturing and only required the applicant to own their own laptop and cellphone.
The female informed him that she was interested in the position and was eager to supplement her income. They agreed to meet in a parking lot near a private hospital in Ballito – KZN.
During their meeting, he informed her that he would require her laptop and cellphone to register a Google account. She handed it over to him and witnessed him enter the hospital. After waiting more than 20 minutes, the victim went in search of the Doctor without success.
She posted her incident on social media and has since been contacted by other individuals who were robbed by a man using the same modus operandi. The victims have not registered criminal cases.
They described the suspect as a smooth talker with strikingly good looks.
