Zambia: Government of Zambia has announced that they will continue supporting capacity-building programs to strengthen support towards albinism. The country has a reasonable population which is born with albinism. The genetic condition affects approximately 1 in every 5000 to 15000 people in Africa.
The condition which is beyond the control of people, leads many people to get discriminated against, In this regard, it is important to note that governments all over the world are working towards protecting the people living with albinism.
They have taken steps to ensure that the issues faced by the people with albinism are addressed appropriately. The government has, in line with this announced support for Organizations representing persons with albinism.
This will help the organizations in advocating for the people’s rights in a more refined manner and protect persons with Albinism.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services, Doreen Mwamba made the announcement at an event on Friday. He was represented by Senior Social Welfare officer Shishe Mwale.
On the minister’s behalf Mwale said “The government is implementing the National Action Plan (NAP)” The project is aimed at creating a framework that will ensure protection, access to education, and health services for persons with albinism.
Mwamba was speaking today during the launch of an Albinism Project under the theme “Out Of The Shadow For Good,”
“Government will work closely with Cheshire Homes and other stakeholders to ensure the NAP is fully aligned with National policies,” said Ms Mwamba.
The minister observed that persons with albinism are often subjected to harmful myths, violence, lack of access to education, healthcare and employment opportunities. The government wants to encourage them to become part of the society through their support and initiatives.
Once the myths and misunderstandings are cleared, the people can become active contributors to the society. They can also improve the standard of their living through access to equal opportunities and education facilities.
Several times, people living with this condition can face prejudices and denial of access to basic rights, such as education.
