Zambia: The Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Zambia has handed over five boreholes to various communities in Chieftainess Kawaza’s area. The region that comes under the Katete District of Eastern Province received the donation worth more than K 300,000.
With the donation, the boreholes, the Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses want to assist the government in providing clean and safe drinking water to its people.
Chieftainess Kawaza of the Chewa people of Katete and Sinda Districts was also present at the handover ceremony. She appreciated the timely gesture and claimed that it would go a long way in bettering the lives of her people.
“We are saying thank you for the boreholes you have given us here in Kawaza Chiefdom. We didn’t know that the Jehovah’s Witnesses are involved in charity works, but today we are witnesses, that while church business is moving, you are also extending a hand to communities,” she said.
The Chieftainess also appealed for more boreholes as a lot of communities did not have access to safe water.
“The chiefdom has 700 villages and many of these do not have water, so we are appealing for more boreholes,” she said.
Meanwhile, the representative of Association of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in Zambia (ZAJW) Skeva Sakala announced that the purpose of the boreholes was to supplement the government’s efforts in its desire to provide clean and safe water to its people.
“I am so happy today on behalf of the Zambia Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses (ZAJW) to handover five boreholes to you. This is among other things that we do in helping communities where we can. The desire is to supplement the government’s efforts,” he said.
Further, Katete District Council, Deputy Chairperson, Lomankio Zulu, urged the communities to guard the property jealously and ensure they saved money for repair of the boreholes.
“We know that in our localities, we only have money once a year, so we need to come together and put money aside for the repair of the boreholes,” he said.
