Zimbabwe: The Abattoir operators are warned not to buy stolen cattle. The owners of abattoirs that have purchased stolen cattle are put in jail for nine years with a term for being accomplices to stock theft.
As per the reports, the police urged communities to take an active role in preventing stock theft. They have encouraged them to demand movement permits for any cattle that is being transported.
Reportedly, three men were arrested for stealing and slaughtering five cattle and were fined US $1,850. The city police are also appealing to the public to report any suspicious activity that is related to stolen cattle. They have also encouraged farmers to help cops in arresting the culprits if they witness such crimes.
The police have arrested two men – Shingirai Muronda and Ackim Meki for theft and slaughtering of the cattle. The officers are conducting the investigation that has led to the discovery of the stolen animals at the abattoir.
The police highlighted that community cooperation is important in the fight against cattle theft crime.
Inspector Milton Mundembe applauded communities for their cooperation in the investigation that led to the recovery of the cattle.
As per the sources, the police extended the warning after an ox and cow were recovered, which were slaughtered at an abattoir in Shamva town.
Farmers were also encouraged to brand their cattle so that they can be identified easily. They were also encouraged to support anti-stock theft committees.
Inspector Mundembe said, “We urge communities to demand movement permits on nay cattle they see being transported.”
“Farmers must brand their cattle for easy identification. Support village anti-stock theft committees and cooperate with the police,” said the officer.
Notably, the recent arrests in the case of cattle rustlers and the strict warning that was issued to abattoir owners demonstrated the seriousness of stock theft and the consequences for those who were involved.
Also, the police are asking the community to play their part and help prevent the crime. The farmers were urged to take measures to protect their livestock.
Moreover, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stated that they can help put an end to stock theft and keep the communities safe.
