Botswana: The Ministry of Youth Gender, Sports and Culture hosted the 16th National Art, Basket and Craft Exhibition. The event was launched on Friday in Gaborone with Ministry officials in attendance.
The exhibition is being held under the theme “The Creative Industry: Botswana’s Economic Future Redefined.”
The creatives in different sectors and arts forms from all over Botswana took the opportunity to participate in the competitions. They showcased their talents in a series of competition hosted across the nation
The exhibition is being hosted as a part of the country’s National Arts Festival will run till the end of August. The theme showcases the country’s artistic talent and cultural diversity’s role in the development of Botswana.
Bridget Poppy John, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Gender Sport and Culture, called the arts and culture sector, the new diamond of Botswana. She noted that this new diamond needs to be marketed.
During her speech at the National Art Gallery on Friday, John emphasized that the National Art, Basket and Craft Exhibition serves as a “vital platform”. The event serves as a unique opportunity for the people of Botswana to showcase their talent.
They can showcase the creativity and the rich diversity of our culture through various forms of fine art and craft.
John encouraged young people to take advantage of existing economic empowerment programs such as the Arts and Culture Grant at the National Arts Council of Botswana (NACB) and the Youth Development Fund to “grow and expand their enterprises” as well as “maximise value chains within the creative space.”
