Nyeri County, Kenya: The Department of Health Services has partnered with a Japanese organization called JOICEP to organize a workshop on International Cooperation in Family Planning. The workshop is based on training 18 healthcare providers on hospital-acquired infections (HAI).
The trainees were drawn from the Nyeri County Referral Hospital, Karatina Hospital, Mukurwe-ini Hospital, Othaya Hospital, Mt Kenya Hospital and Nyeri Town Health Centre.
Various dignitaries from the Health Services Department and JOICEP attended the Session.
During the training session, the trainees, who are also part of the facility’s IPC membership from the outpatient, ICU, and renal units, underwent an intensive 4-day training.
Their training incorporated both physical and virtual sessions. Dr. Tomohiko Sugishita, President and Director of Yakushima Onoaida Clinic in Tokyo, Japan, presided over the Session.
After the training, the participants were assessed with a set of questions to test their knowledge and application. They also developed action plans for their respective facilities to act as guides in the implementation of the knowledge gained during the training, which will be assessed frequently under the guidance of the County IPC Coordinator.
Hospital Acquired Infections are infections caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens and happen within the period a patient receives treatment.
These common infections are BSI, Bloodstream infection, pneumonia, Urinary Tract infection (UTI) and Surgical site infections (SSI).
County IPC Coordinator Boniface Macharia applauded JOICFP for their noble gesture of championing Infection Prevention and Control.
He urged the participants to embrace best practices like hand hygiene, which go a long way in mitigating hospital-acquired infections.
Notably, JOICEP is a Japan-based non-governmental organization organization that is actively working to address the issues of sexual reproductive health and rights. The organization aimed to Improve the health status of all people.
The JOICEP and the Department of Health Services have worked collaboratively since 2018. Since that period, Nyeri County has achieved many significant milestones, such as the introduction of operationalizing maternity in the Health services centre.
