City of Cape Town team is working diligently on the sites of various areas that requires to be assisted with the blockages due to fallen trees. Along with the city team the Multi-disciplinary Disaster Co-ordinating team also remained active until the worst of the weather and addressed the impacts of the storm.
Considering the recent, weather conditions, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith released a statement and said that the city is doing all it can to address the impacts as quickly as possible, as Cape Town grapples with the inclement weather which is set to prevail for most of the week.
Smith highlighted that these weather episodes take a toll on some of the most vulnerable communities. He said that the city is fortunate to have numerous NGO partners who are ready to assist at a moment’s notice with meals, food parcels, blankets personal hygiene items and baby packs amongst others to help communities which are in need.
He mentioned, “We also receive several requests from the public at large during these incidents. Especially, who want to assist in one way or another.”
“Anyone who wishes to make a donation to general relief efforts but also desire just to ease the load on the NGO partners, is very much welcome and encouraged to do so,” said JP Smith.
MCM for Safety and Security, Alderman Smith notified that donation can be non-perishable foodstuff, personal hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, face-cloths and sanitary towels. The donations can also include nappies and baby formula as well as blankets and construction materials such as wood and corrugated sheeting.
Furthermore, the public can donate directly to their humanitarian relief NGO of choice. Besides this the City of Cape Town has also made the facility of fire stations available as drop off points considering Sir Lowry’s Pass, Strand, Goodwood, Ottery, Roeland Street and Lakeside.
As per the latest weather update for Sunday, July 07, 2024, the impacts to date included flooding of roads and fallen trees.
Assessment in Philippi is underway, where the reports of flooding were received. Similar reports are still under investigation in Asanda Village and Mfuleni.
Reportedly, in Endlovini, around 800 structures were got damaged by the strong gusts of wind overnight on Thursday, the city is in discussions with Province and National Government about shelter for affected persons requiring the major assistance.
The Humanitarian relief efforts are ongoing in the area, where the NGO ‘Gift of the Givers’ have set up a base in Khayelitsha to distribute meals and blankets.
Many of the roads flooded in the early hours of the morning were cleared and the likely impacts have been observed, for which motorists were reminded to please exercise with extreme caution.
As per the sources, the Roads Department is conducting an inspection in Kalk Bay, to check if any additional impact has affected. Following this, two mud slides were recorded earlier, this week.
Lately, the department is also pumping water from the Highlands Estate. With this, the Recreation and Parks Department reported four incidents of trees falling over.
However, the Residents are advised and requested to stay indoors and to report any service requests on one of the officially recommended channels.
