Zambia: The government of Zambia has warned against the misuse of cyberspace and the dangers of sharing unverified information on social media. The administration believes that any misuse of cyber space can lad to significant damage.
Hacking, bullying and spreading of misinformation in the cyber space on purpose can potentially disrupt the lives of several victims. The Home Affairs and Internal Security Minister, Jack Mwiimbu made the call recently.
He notes that there is a need for responsible social media usage in order to curb the spread of false information and cyber bullying. Cyber space, internet and social media has invaded several aspects of normal life.
The Minister made these remarks during a joint press briefing in Lusaka on Monday. He was at the time accompanying the Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati.
During the Minister’s address during the media interaction Mwiimbu highlighted the consequences of unethical cyber practices.
At the time, he said the misuse of cyberspace poses a significant threat to national peace, security and social cohesion. The administration has been spreading this message on all the levels of nation and society.
He stated that the government and other stakeholders have made progress in combating misuse of cyberspace. He also added that the government is working hard to curb the other vices prevalent in the country to ensure a safer and more secure environment for all Zambians.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu further cautioned members of the public against the people who are in the habit of spreading falsehoods on social media.
Furthermore, the Minister of Technology and Science Mutati indicated that the government is making efforts to promote cyber security and also to apprehend the people who are involved in misuse of the platform.
The Minister urged Zambians to verify information before sharing it online, stressing the need to promote a culture of digital literacy and responsibility
