Robben Island has become a significant symbol of the way in which democracy and freedom triumphs over oppression and racism. It is an island situated in Table Bay 12 km off the coast from Cape Town.
It has isolated certain people since the end of the 17th century. The island is being used as a leper colony from 1836 to 1931. In 20th century it became infamous as a goal for political prisoners under Apartheid. However, most of the saved buildings reflects late 20th century’s maximum security prison for political prisoners.
