Malawi: A 30-year-old man identified as Madalitso Chibwana, has committed suicide inside a toilet. The incident happened at the St. Augustine Primary School in Mzuzu district.
The Mzuzu Police Station Deputy Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Cecilia Mfune has confirmed the reports of the incident. He said that the incident allegedly happened on June 5, 2025 at the school which is located in Luwinga township.
Mfune confirmed that the police has recieved the reports of another suicide in the Kang’ona area of the township.
The families had been discussing the incident, when the victim joined them. He told his parents that he would be the next to die. After this conversation, they all went to sleep in the house and the parents did not take the victim’s remarks seriously at that moment.
The police officers added that on June 5, Chibwana woke up around 06:00 hours and left the house to go to an unknown place. At around 07:00 hours, his parents were informed that their son had hanged himself in the toilet at the St. Augustine Primary School.
She further said that the incident was reported to Luwinga Police Unit. Afterwards the body was taken to Mzuzu Central Hospital Mortuary where the postmortem was done. The postmortem tests revealed that Chibwana died because of suffocation due to strangulation.
Meanwhile, the police officers in Mzuzu are advising people to seek counseling and guidance than committing suicide. Mental health is an overlooked aspect of life and needs more attention from the families as well as friends.
The Police PRO noted that the victim should have sought help and not taken such a drastic step of taking his own life. The reason for the action has not been made clear from the end of the family but concerns of mental health are suspected to be at the forefront of the situation.
Chibwana was a resident of the Nanthambwe Village ,Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikowi in Zomba District.
