Cape Town: Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth and Tourism – Alderman James Vos with UVU Africa, the Tech Industry Partner, attended the success party of CAPACITI skills programme, this week.
CAPACITI was established in 2010, that has trained over 6,000 young people with critical digital skills such as software development and systems support. The programme is dedicatedly emphasising on upskilling youths who are ready to accept the updated versions of technology or tech training.
Alderman James Vos further stated that people needs to acquire abilities which not only makes them more employable, but strengthens Cape Town’s economy and make it more future-fit city.
Reportedly, trainees on the programme have gone to carve out a space for themselves either in their own business or in other major corporations.

In 2024, Oceans Five team participated in CAPACITI coding incubation programme that took home the top prize at the Innovation Hackathon of the City of Cape Town. It is a 24-hour marathon event where entrants were challenged to come up with an ‘e-Public Participation Platform’. This platform is used by the City of Cape Town to improve direct access of residents for the services.
Oceans Five utilised their tech training to create a web application that enabled residents to search for jobs and to see which City projects are currently on the go.
James Vos further stated that by supporting platforms like UVU Africa, the objective of the City of Cape Town is to continue being a valuable resource of skills development. The communities will be empowered to find a place in an evolving economy.
