Cape Town: The Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town updated residents on progress of Kommetjie Road roadworks. The project work needs to be extended due to unforeseen circumstances on site and is estimated to be completed by Dec 31, 2025. The city sincerely appreciates the patience and understanding of the community, as the critical upgrade has been finalised, already.
Reportedly, the roadworks will continue develop during the builders’ break in an effort to complete the project before the start of the new year. The residents and commuters were advised that the work is scheduled for weekdays between 07:30 a.m. and 05:30 p.m. and on Saturdays as per the requirement.
The upgrade of Kommetjie Road is taking place between the intersections with Capri Drive and Wood Road, that just past Masiphumelele. Once complete, the additional lanes will assist in alleviate the congestion during the peak periods for those who are travelling between Kommetjie, Ocean View, Imhoff’s Gift, Heron Park, Masiphumelele, Sunnydale and beyond.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that first and foremost, he want to thank the residents and road users in the Kommetjie area for their continued patience throughout the Kommetjie Road widening and upgrade project.
Quintas said that he and his team completely understand the frustration caused by the unforeseen delays and the current congestion in the area, particularly during peak periods.
Unfortunately, they encountered unforeseen challenges and delays on site, which is common for many road projects. The contractor adjusted their sequencing and resources accordingly. All efforts are being made to ensure that they can complete the upgrade by the end of December 2025.
Furthermore, they appreciate the support received by the communities while they are working during the festive season.
The Kommetjie Road upgrade project aims to bring the improvements to the area, by improving the capacity along the east-bound lanes and at the intersections and entry points to Masiphumelele at Chasmay Road; Pokela Road and Lekkerwater Road.
It aims to maintain continuity of cycle lanes along Kommetjie Road and through major intersections to accommodate and encourage cycling as a viable mode of transport in the valley during commuter peak periods. Also, it will accommodate public transport stops.
