Dominica: President Sylvanie Burton received credentials from the ambassador from Sweden to Dominica Maria Velasco on Wednesday, Dec 03, 2025 at the State House. She stated that since the establishment of the diplomatic relations between the two countries have shared a strong commitment to common goals.
President Burton stated that the two countries have established their diplomatic relations in 1978. She noted that the Dominica and Sweden might differ in size and geography, but the nations share a deep and abiding commitment to:
- Principled Multilateralism
- Sustainable Development
- Environmental Stewardship, and
- Advancement of Human Rights

According to Sylvanie Burton, these shared values form a strong foundation for the continued strengthening of bilateral relations. She expressed that their shared goals focus on more cooperation between the countries.
President Burton said that the Commonwealth of Dominica is pursuing an ambitious national agenda that is focused on climate resilience, renewable energy, sustainable growth and social advancement.
She stated that the people of Dominica have taken note of global leadership of Sweden acknowledged by the world, especially in renewable energy development, climate innovation, education, health, eco-tourism, gender equity, digital governance and public sector transparency. Such objectives provide meaningful opportunities for cooperation between the countries.

Meanwhile the new ambassador from Sweden to Dominica – Mario Velasco emphasised that the countries must work together to combat global challenges. The ambassador from Sweden to Dominica said that they live in difficult times where undemocratic forces are undermining the international legal order and human rights in the world.
Both the countries, Sweden and Dominica share the commitment to peaceful conflict resolution, upholding international law and standing up for human rights. Only by working together they can face these challenges to a more peaceful world. Their commitment to multilateralism is manifested in the United Nations where they need to take a firm stance against Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
