Cape Town: Metro police officers recovered a brand-new truck and some of its R2,569,847 alcohol cargo, just hours after it had been hijacked in Grabouw last week. They also arrested two men in Khayelitsha in connection with the crime. The City enforcement agencies arrested 334 suspects in the past week.
Reportedly, on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 Metro Police officers received a tip-off about the location of a hijacked truck in Endlovini, Khayelitsha. The vehicle had been hijacked in Grabouw earlier that morning by 10 suspects.
The suspects were busy offloading the alcohol when officers arrived, but most of them fled on spotting the officers. Two suspects, of age 40 and 36, were apprehended during a foot chase and arrested for the possession of a hijacked vehicle, possession of stolen property, and resisting arrest. They were taken to Harare SAPS.
As per the sources, the recovered vehicle is a brand new 14-ton Isuzu truck, while the alcohol was valued at R1,628,118 (not all the alcohol was recovered). The alcohol was originally transported from Cape Town to Hermanus.
Meanwhile, neighbourhood safety officers in Bonteheuwel responded to a tip-off of a youngster planning to rob learners outside a primary school on Thursday, January 29, 2026. Officers spotted a group of young people loitering near the school and one tried to flee. He was caught with an imitation firearm in his possession, arrested and taken to Bishop Lavis SAPS.
Law Enforcement officers also arrested five men soon after receiving reports that they were driving around Gugulethu, robbing residents at gunpoint. The vehicle and a modified firearm were confiscated, while the suspects were taken to Gugulethu SAPS for further investigation.
Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that tip-offs are a crucial, intelligence-driven tool for combating crime and in the one instance, prevented it from taking place. All three of these incident tip-offs led to successful arrests.
It also disrupts organised crime syndicates and helps them address the issues that plague the neighbourhoods. He commended the officers who followed up on the information and those residents who called it in. He thanked all for not turning a blind eye and joining them in the fight against crime. As their input is valued in keeping the areas safe and rooting out criminals.
