Dominica Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthen the agriculture and agro-processing sectors of the country. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has urged to do so through closer collaboration with producers, beekeepers and value-added manufacturers.
During a stakeholder engagement session, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of partnerships in building a more resilient and competitive agricultural economy. He addressed the beekeepers, pepper sauce producers, and other agro-processors, and appreciated them for their continued contributions to rural livelihoods, food security, and economic development.
PM Skerrit noted that agriculture in Dominica is evolving beyond traditional farming into value addition, branding, quality assurance, and market readiness areas, which are critical to expand in both regional and international market.
This engagement formed part of the wider consultations of the government with small and micro-enterprises during the recent budget discussions. Participants highlighted common challenges, particularly the limitations faced when operating individually, including access to:
- infrastructure,
- technical support, and
- consistent market opportunities
Furthermore, the government is exploring the establishment of dedicated agro-processing and bottling facilities for honey and pepper products. These facilities would be constructed and equipped to international standards and made available to producers at no direct cost, enabling improved production, packaging, and compliance with quality requirements.
Prime Minister of Dominica also encouraged stakeholders to consider forming cooperative company structures one for honey producers and another for pepper sauce manufacturers. He explained this approach would allow producers to maintain independence while collaborating on shared services such as marketing, procurement, processing, and branding under a strong national identity.
Consolidated efforts could lead to reduced input costs, stronger bargaining power, and access to larger, more stable markets.
PM Skerrit emphasised that Dominica’s honey and pepper products hold significant potential to be positioned as premium exports, supported by the country’s biodiversity and the dedication of its producers. However, he stressed that any initiative would depend on the willingness and active participation of stakeholders.
Prime Minister concluded the session with an open invitation for feedback, with government representatives. He reiterated their readiness to provide legal, financial, and technical support. He noted that this initiative is ultimately aimed at building sustainable industries, creating opportunities for young people, and strengthening economic future of Dominica through collective action.
