Cape Town: The Recreation and Parks Department of the City of Cape Town hosted its Area Games series on Human Rights Day. Hundreds of young people gathered at Voorbrug sports field in Delft and observed a sporting event on Human Rights Day. It was the first of the Area Games events that will culminate in the very popular Cape Town Games at the end of April 2026.
Reportedly, the event attracted hundreds of young people who participated in a range of sports and recreational activities. The day of the programme catered for age under 14 and 16 groups and included:
- Tag Rugby
- Morabaraba
- Fast Five Netball
- Five -a-side Soccer
- Dominoes
- Dodgeball
- Puca
- 3 Blikkies
- Table Tennis
Pickleball was also introduced through a demonstration and coaching clinic.

Considering this, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham stated that it’s inspiring to see so many young people coming together through sport. As sport promotes healthy competition; it’s a great way to make new friends and helps in developing skills that could unlock future opportunities.
According to Higham, the game days are a great way to spotlight the recreational programmes by the City of Cape Town. Higham further hopes that it will also encourage more young people to join after school programmes at their local facilities. The city has a range of activities to keep people of all ages engaged, so she urged residents to please make use of these services.
The Area Games in Delft is one of the four area events, in the lead up to the bigger Cape Town Games that are taking place on Freedom Day, which is an annual fixture on the Recreation and Parks Department calendar since 2013. Last year, 300 learners participated in the Cape Town Games held at Erica Park in Belhar. Also, leaners who are interested in participating in the Area and Cape Town Games can visit their nearest recreational facility.
