Cape Town: Metro Police Officers were stoned by hostile community members in Athlone, as city condemns attempts to free gun-wielding suspect, this weekend. The officers arrested a suspect in a shooting incident, and statistics already point towards an increase on Metro Police Officers in this financial year.
On Sunday, April 12, 2026 around 10:59 a.m. the Metro Police Officers were dispatched to The Vlei informal settlement in Athlone, after receiving the reports of gunfire. On arrival the officers identified a suspect by holding a firearm. He tried to runaway but was apprehended quickly and relieved the 9mm Ruger pistol in his possession, along with 18 rounds of ammunition.
Some members of the community became hostile and effected the arrest. They began to throw stones at police vehicles, which resulted in damage to two City vehicles.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith stated that despite of putting their best efforts to run interference, the officers were able to contain the situation and transport, as the suspect to the police station.
On the downside, the damaged patrol vehicles will have to be off the road while repairs are completed, which is considered as unnecessary cost, two fewer vehicles for visible patrols and responded to complaints. However, they are thankful that no staff members were injured, as these actions must be condemned in the strongest terms.
Smith said, “It can’t be that we cry out for safer communities and then behave in this manner towards the very people who are trying to help. Attacks on our staff have become so commonplace, and just a cursory look at Metro Police incidents already point to an increase in this financial year.”
