City of Cape Town remains committed to address the streetlight faults across the metro with intensified efforts ahead of the winter months. The city recorded and resolved a total of 29,526 electricity related service requests between March and April 2026.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Energy – Alderman Xanthea Limberg stated that the electricity teams of the City of Cape Town has attended over 340 streetlight service requests per day across the metro. To illustrate the impact of the recent once in 200-year-storm, City Energy teams responded to over 16,000 service requests over four delays alone.
Limberg said that their performance remained strong and reflects the unwavering commitment to maintain service delivery. The Area East of the City recorded the highest number of streetlight-related service requests attended to with a total of 3,979 up from 3,501 in the previous month. Area East includes Helderberg, Oostenberg, Bloemhof and Parow. Area North recorded 2,370 streetlight requests, while Area South recorded 3,235 service requests during the same period.
She added that it is important to note that these figures reflect streetlight service requests prior to the stormy weather experienced in May. The team anticipate that the data for the period between April and May 2026 will show an increase in service requests as a result of the adverse weather conditions.
The data for streetlight related vandalism and theft also remains high and despite the continued efforts to curb this, Alderman Xanthea Limberg and her team is seeing unnecessary streetlight infrastructure damage due to theft and vandalism. Residents may contact the City and South African Police Service if they witness any suspicious activity near electricity infrastructure in their communities. Let’s protect the infrastructure together.
