Cape Town is preparing to take meaningful steps towards a brighter future as the Blisters for Bread Charity Family Fun Walk returns to the city. Thousands will gather at the Green Point Common Sports Grounds for a morning that combines family fun community spirit and a shared commitment to help vulnerable children across the Western Cape.
The event will take place on Sunday, August 16, 2026 and will see around 10,000 walkers taking on two routes in the Atlantic Seaboard. For nearly six decades Blisters for Bread has united people around a powerful mission: ensuring that no child spends a school day on an empty stomach.
Blisters for Bread began as a fundraising walk which has now grown into one of the Western Cape’s most loved charity events creating lasting impact in communities annually. This year’s event promises an inspiring day of walking, entertainment and giving back reminding participants that every step can help in changing a child’s future.
Cape Town Tradition that Continues to Change Lives
Now in its 58th year Blisters for Bread remains one of the region’s most impactful fundraising initiatives supporting nutrition programmes that benefit over 30,000 vulnerable learners attending under-resourced educational institutions across the Western Cape.
For many children access to nutritious meals can make a significant difference to their ability to learn, concentrate and participate in the classroom.
The funds raised through the event help in providing essential nutrition support to schools, Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centres, special needs schools and other educational facilities serving communities affected by poverty. The impact extends far beyond the dining table.
Educators and programme coordinators have consistently highlighted how improved nutrition contributes to better learner attendance, increased classroom engagement and stronger academic performance. By participating in Blisters for Bread residents are not simply taking part in a walk-they are helping in creating opportunities for children to learn, grow and reach their full potential.
It is more than just an annual event. The walk reflects generosity, compassion and civic pride that continue to define Cape Town and its residents.
A Family Day with Purpose
While the cause remains at the heart of the event, participants can also look forward to a memorable day out for the whole family.
Starting in Stephan Way in Green Point, walkers will make their way along the iconic Sea Point Promenade before returning to the Green Point Common Sports Grounds taking in some of Cape Town’s spectacular coastal scenery along the route.
Participants will partake between 10km Walk – starting at 07:30 a.m. and 5km Walk – starting at 08:00 a.m.
Once the walk concludes the event village will come alive with entertainment, food stalls and activities for all ages. This year’s entertainment programme features performances by Paxton – Winner of SA Idols 2017; Steven Lee Lewis – Member of the 2014 X-Factor champion group FOUR; and Sketchy Bongo – Acclaimed producer, songwriter and DJ.
Here at the event, families can enjoy a variety of food offerings, interactive activities and live entertainment, by creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates both community and compassion. Whether you’re walking with family, friends, colleagues or classmates, the event offers a meaningful way to spend a Sunday morning while supporting a worthy cause.
