United Nations commemorated Africa Day 2025 with the theme ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations’. The African Union led the celebration which focused on acknowledging the rich heritage of the continent, its diverse culture and the need for addressing historical injustices, especially the legacy of slavery, colonialism and apartheid.
Reportedly, permanent representatives of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations – Dr. Mutryce Williams and the third secretary – Mrs. Lecia Phipps has recently participated in several activities at the Africa Dialogue Series 2025, observed under the Africa Day 2025.
It was a month-long event, which was observed in May at the United Nations and concluded with High-Level Dialogue on May 30, 2025. The 2025 edition followed the selected theme for the event.
Considering their participation H.E. Williams expressed that, it was very important to ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis was represented at the Africa Dialogue Series 2025, because of its historical ties to Africa that has shaped the civilization.
Also, the St. Kitts and Nevis have keen interest in deepening the relations with the African brothers and sisters at this time. Recently, the Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew led a delegation to Nigeria and hailed his presence on African soil as a pivotal moment in strengthening the ties between the Caribbean and African continent.
During his visit, PM Drew highlighted that Africa holds immense potential for deepened partnerships which the St. Kitts and Nevis federation wants to advance eagerly.
Therefore, as an Ambassador to the United Nations, they will work vigorously to explore all key opportunities for engagement within his jurisdiction, in line with fulfilling the Prime Minister’s vision of expanding the relations with the African continent.
ADS 2025 was aimed at stimulating informed reflection on justice for Africans and people of African descent and encouraged meaningful dialogue on reparations. It provided a platform for partners and stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of current international strategies and frameworks concerning reparative justice for Africans and people of African descent and advocate for policies to boost initiatives that enhances financial, environmental, economic and social justice.
Furthermore, the second Africa-CARICOM Summit is slated to take place in Adis Ababa, Ethiopia to be held on September 07, 2025 and aims to build on the outcomes of first Summit which was held virtually in 2021, as both regions seek to foster closer collaboration and strengthened ties, by promoting south-south cooperation.
