Cape Town: Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Growth and Tourism – Alderman James Vos acknowledged Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) for upgrading the Cape Town International Airport (CTIA). ACSA fulfilled its commitment and marked a significant step forward in enhancing the capacity, efficiency and passenger experience of the airport.
Reportedly, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) announced a comprehensive R21.7 billion investment plan with an aim to upgrade CTIA.
Considering this, Alderman James Vos said that for a long time, he has been motivating for these upgrades as part of their big push to land more flights and open new international air routes.
Thanks to these sustained efforts, Cape Town is now welcoming 228 international flights every week and is connected to 31 destinations worldwide, said Vos. He added that this initiative clearly demonstrates the tourism campaigns and city-to-city agreements, which are working and creating tangible benefits for the visitor economy.

According to Wesgro, international arrivals at Cape Town International Airport injected R24.3 billion into the Western Cape economy, earlier in 2022 and supported 10,600 jobs. This underscored the pivotal role of aviation in driving economic growth and job creation in the region.
Notably, the planned upgradations included the construction of a new runway, expansion of both domestic and international terminals, and introduction of advanced security features, that are essential to meet the increasing passenger and cargo volumes. With over 10 million passengers processed in 2024 and a 56% rise in cargo volumes in 2025, these enhancements are timely and crucial.
James Vos commended ACSA for prioritising these developments and for fulfilling their commitment to transform CTIA into a world-class airport. This investment not only bolstered the tourism and economic sectors but also positioned Cape Town as a competitive player in the global aviation industry.
He looked forward to work closely with ACSA to monitor their project timeline and delivery plan, by ensuring these upgrades are implemented efficiently and on schedule, which will undoubtedly benefit the community and the broader economy.
