The City of Cape Town celebrated International Women’s Day with Women in Tech. Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate Services Directorate – Alderman Theresa Uys hosted more than 120 senior women leaders in Digital, IT and Technology from across private and public sectors to empower, uplift and open doors for one another in tech industries.
Reportedly, the Women-in-Digital event formed part of the recognition and celebration by the City of Cape Town for International Women’s Day 2025 under this year’s theme ‘Accelerate Action’.
Alderman Theresa Uys further stated that technology is not just about codes and circuits. It is about solving real-world problems, enhancing lives and creating a better future. The women remained under-represented in the tech industry in this 21st century.
However, it is not about lack of talent, drive or passion. It is a matter of opportunity, access and support.
Moreover, the Women-in-Digital event provided an opportunity for the audience internally and externally to listen to the other inspirational women who are driving transformational initiatives for youth and women in Cape Town.
Considering this, Founder and CEO of the Personal Mastery Lab – Saffron Baggallay delivered a keynote speech and shared valuable insights on accelerating action for humans in business. The speech was followed by a panel discussion on Digital-for-good projects which was led by Founder and Managing Director of redAcademy – Jessica Hawkey, Strategist and thought leader – Aveena Mothilall, and Director of Library and Information Services – Ninnie Steyn.
Founder of Masiphumelele Creative Hub – Yandiswa Mazwane shared her experience in providing safe spaces for community members to access safe and educational environments to overcome challenges.
Theresa Uys also said that they need to address the gender gap in technology by advocating for more inclusive workplaces and mentorship opportunities. The companies must prioritise diversity as it is the right thing to do, but the diverse teams create better solutions.
“Studies have shown that the companies with inclusive cultures are more innovative and financially successful. When women thrive, the industry thrives. Let’s commit to action. Let’s support one another, mentor the next generation and challenge the status quo,” concluded Uys.
