Nigeria: The Executive Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Onengiyeofori George, DSSRS has announced the plans to celebrate the memories of one of ASALGA’s icons and Nigeria’s most celebrated Highlife legend, the late Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson.
The celebration of the Asari Toru LGA Icon will be held 53 years after his demise. The executive chairperson made the announcement during a meeting on Friday.
The meeting included several people of high stature in the Local government area, including:
- Members of his cabinet,
- Rex’s second son and last born, Osima Rex Lawson,
- A family member, Elder Sopriala Hutchinson Bobmanuel,
Highlife music enthusiasts from the LGA were also present at the meeting. The meeting attendants said the event will be held on January 16, 2024 which marks the 53rd memorial of the death of Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson.
The Chairman further noted that though Rex Lawson is no more but the music of the Highlife King and the values for which he dedicated his life have kept his memory burning both at home and abroad. The artist has brought many laurels to the Asari Toru Local Government Area.
He was a respected and accomplished artist who has become an inspiration for the people of the country.
Chairman Onengiyeofori George opined that the late Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson is believed to be the most outstanding among the musicians who dominated the music scene in Nigeria in the 1960s. He added that Rex’s contemporaries in his time could not match the touch he added to highlife music.
The event in honor of the Highlife legend will be held on January 16, 2024. The King Amachree Square, Buguma City will serve as the venue.
ASALGA executive Chairman announced that the event promises to be well organized in collaboration with Rex’s family, celebrating the Buguma-Born Highlife icon, late Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, whose music touched lives across borders, transcended his time and continues to elicit public interest till date.
This is yet another first-of-its-kind of the Asalga-First Administration led by the people’s Chairman, Hon. Onengiyeofori George in the Asari-Toru Local Government Area.
