Portfolio Head for Sport Recreation, Arts and Culture Councillor Bassie Kamana believes the City is moving in the right direction to position itself as a mecca of boxing.
“We are pleased and confident that the golden days will return to our City. This is the fifth tournament this year. In order to keep boxing alive in the province, we must keep our boxers active.
“Boxing is our heritage because our region used to be the mecca of boxing and we are to regain the status. When I walk around and see these tournaments, it means the region is finding its feet.”
The MMC has also praised the metro for hosting sporting activities, saying that it helps to boost both the local economy and sports tourism.
“Umasipala ombhaxa uzimisele ukusebenzisana nabantu bamanqindi ukuwaphucula khonukuze afikelele kwizinga eliphezulu.”
Nelson Mandela Bay Promoters Association Secretary Sibongile Kebe says the municipal commitment doesn’t benefit only the region but the surrounding areas as well.
This is the fifth event since the municipality signed a three-year contract with the NMB Promoters Association to develop and revive boxing in the City.
