The famous publication known for its well-guided beaches, BeachAtlas, has released a list of the top 100 beaches that are liked by the people in the world the most.
Out of those 100 beaches, Cape Town’s Boulders Beach has been placed as the second most favourite beach of the tourists.
The beaches have been selected as a part of the Golden Beach Awards for 2024 by BeachAtlas.
The Boulders Beach is known as the beloved attraction of the tourists. Popular for its adorable penguin colony is the reason that Boulders Beach is selected by a group of experts.
The selection criteria included the natural beauty, inclusivity and natural diversity. The travel publication has described the unique spots of the South African beach that allows the beach lovers to chill on the beach while watching the tuxedo-clad locals waddle all around. These attractions prove that the beach bods come in all shapes and sizes.
Placing Boulders Beach as second in the beach catalogue, the BeachAtlas writes, “South Africa isn’t a picturesque stretch of sand it is a bustling metropolis for African Penguins who are affectionately known as ‘Jackass Penguins’ as they live up to their name with the distinctive braying sounds.”
Adding in its acknowledgement, BeachAtlas added, “This unique spot allows you to chill on the beach while watching these tuxedo-clad locals waddle around and proves that beach bods come in all shapes and sizes.”
Preparing the catalogue, was a quest for the world’s best beaches zeroes on their visual allure such as, powdery sands and clear blue waters.
The selection goes beyond the conventional points as embracing the richer tapestry of what makes a beach stand out of the others.
Considerably, this is the first ever selection to expand and encompass the diverse criteria such as the value to the local community, lifestyle offerings, cultural significance and DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion).
The travel journal included a broader perspective that allowed it to shine a light on the beaches that typically don’t make any traditional, unidimensional ‘best beach’ list.
Boulders Beach is a sheltered beach which is made up of inlets between the granite boulders and from which the name is originated.
The Beach is located on the Cape Peninsula, in Simon’s Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa and is commonly known as Boulders Bay.
It is recognised as a popular tourist spot due to the colony of African Penguins and Table Mountain National Park.
Golden Beach Awards for 2024 by BeachAtlas was conducted recently in April 2024 in which Bora Bora Beach from French Polynesia was placed first and Waikiki Beach of USA was placed third.
Other beaches of Africa which were considered in the list by BeachAtlas than Boulders Beach of South Africa were:
- Skeleton Coast from Namibia was placed 9th.
- Source d’Argent from Seychelles was placed 17th.
- Diani Beach from Kenya was placed 32nd.
- Bloubergstrand from South Africa was placed 33rd.
- Le Morne Beach from Mauritius was placed 63rd.
- Clifton Beaches from South Africa was 68th.
- Sharm el Sheikh from Egypt was placed 69th.
- Mafia Island from Tanzania was placed 98th.
