Botswana, Kanye: The planned multi-million Kanye Sports Complex was inaugurated yesterday on Thursday by the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture Tumiso Rakgare in Kanye, Botswana.
Mhiko is the last of the ten other ongoing sports complex projects at Bobonong, Rakops, Tsabong, Goodhope, Kasane, Tonota, Mmadinare, Tutume, Moshupa and Kanye.
The making of the multi-million Kanye Sports Complex started in 2015. It was built on 17.8 hectares of land and took around ten years to complete.
MYSC Minister Tumiso Rakgare also gave a speech in which he said that the Botswana Government recognizes sports and their value chain. The Minister added that the government believes in recognizing and nurturing young talent to its full capacity, hence access to such projects will lure athletes to perform to their optimum.
Furthermore, Minister Rakgare also praised Botswana and its sports he said, “Kanye has produced several professional athletes such as Terrence Mophuting, Phenyo Mongala and Tebogo Letsile, amongst others, saying it will therefore be fitting for the stadium to be named after one of the sports stars from the Ngwaketse District”.
“This should motivate those who are recognized as potential or upcoming athletes in the Ngwaketse District to take sports seriously and utilize this stadium for their training for better and outstanding results,” encouraged Rakgare.
The Minister outlined that the project will benefit youth in sports and locals in non-competitive sports seeking to improve their health and generate income for community development; there will also be the creation of employment during and after construction and improve the aesthetic of Kanye.
Minister Rakgare urged the Ngwaketse community to fully utilize the stadium in a sustainable way in order to reap the desired out of the project.
The project includes the football pitch inclusive of an athletics track, volleyball and netball pitch, changing rooms, stalls and ablutions. The total project budget is approximately P9.2 million.
