Botswana: Dr Mokgweetsi E.K.Masisi, President of Botswana, will participate at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78th) meeting in New York City, U.S.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that President Masisi will participate in the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 78) from 19th to 23rd September 2023.

World leaders will start to engage in the annual High-Level General Debate under the theme, “Rebuilding Trust and Reigniting Global Solidarity: Accelerating Action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals Towards Peace, Prosperity Progress and Sustainability for All.

This week’s High-Level Dialogue will address some of the most pressing world problems that need global cooperation. The war in Ukraine is expected to be a top feature of the UN Agenda.

Also under review will be the progress made in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This summit marks the halfway point in SDG’s implementation deadline, which is set for 2030.

The High Level Dialogue on Financing for Development will provide the UN with an opportunity to look at the progress made in the implementation of the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, a UN framework used to mobilise resources needed in the attainment of the SDG.

Summit will also deliberate on the United Nations Climate Ambition Summit, with the hope that it will urge world leaders, the Private Sector and Non State Actors to demonstrate their alignment and commitment to deliver on the 1.5°C Paris Agreement and to finance sustainable development.

High Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response. This meeting aims to accelerate political will and commitment towards a response to pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

High Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage. World leaders will dialogue on accelerating strengthened health care systems. UNGA 78 will discuss progress made in the fight against Tuberculosis under the High Level Meeting on the Fight against Tuberculosis.

High Level Meeting on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. Nuclear Disarmament remains a major priority for the UN.
