Botswana: His Honour The Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, has commended the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) for its achievements.

During the Renewable Energy Agric voltaic Project launch this morning, Vice President Tsogwane congratulated BUAN for the achievement, citing that it aligns well with the Government’s Reset Agenda set out by His Excellency the President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

He said the Government had made a commitment to move away from carbon-intense modes of energy generation as outlined in the Integrated Electricity Resource Plan, which states that at least 15% of electricity should come from renewables by 2036.

Mr Tsogwane further stated that the project will go a long way towards achieving financial sustainability for BUAN, adding that State-Owned Enterprises should partner with the private sector on capital projects and raise their own revenues to reduce over-reliance on limited Government funding. BUAN has been transferred to the Ministry of Education and Skills Development from the Ministry of Agriculture. He said BUAN has already started assisting other institutions with the development of solar farms.

The Vice President called on the private sector to partner with BUAN in delivering their mandate of agriculture to improve the livelihoods of Batswana. He reiterated that the partnerships should focus more on food security and innovative research to better position Botswana as a knowledge-based economy.

For his part, BUAN Vice Chancellor, Professor Ketlhatlogile Mosepele, said BUAN supplies itself with electricity and also sells excess power to Botswana Power Corporation. He said the project is a success story of stakeholder collaboration between the private and public sectors, which collectively contribute to sustainable resources consistent with the mandate of BUAN.

Professor Mosepele said that their mission as the University is to produce innovative graduates and technological solutions for sustainable development of Agriculture and natural resources, which resonates with President Masisi’s Reset Agenda.
