Botswana: The Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture of Botswana will celebrate International Women’s Day at Paje Village in Central District on March 6, 2024. The ceremony will be commemorated under the theme ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress’ around 2:00 p.m.
The Ministry is organising the event with the objective to celebrate the International Women’s Day and for which different ways are used to convey the message of International Women’s Day.
The Ministry of Youth of Botswana has also adopted some of the ways to make people aware of the Women’s Day. The first and foremost step is to create awareness on how the International Women’s Day has come into being and how it relates to our or anybody’s situation.
It is important to commemorate the achievements, contribution, efforts and struggles of women that were made towards the entire development process.
The day is also dedicated to discuss women’s past strengths and successes as well as their weaknesses and failures. These points are discussed with a view to find solutions and to remove the constraints experienced.
It is also celebrated with the purpose to educate and sensitize the public on matters related to the status of women. It also discusses the extent to which gender balance has been achieved between men and women.
International Women’s Day popularly known with the acronym ‘IWD’ is celebrated every year on March 08, focusing mainly upon the Women’s rights movement.
Moreover, it also focuses on the issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights and violence and also emphasise on violence and abuse against women.
Notably, IWD was developed from the labor movement in North America and Europe during the early 20th century which is spurred by the universal female suffrage movement.
The United Nations (UN) observes the day by granting a holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign or theme in women’s rights.
IWD still reflects its political origins in some parts of the world being marked by protests and calls for a radical change.
Whereas, in the areas in west, it is mainly a sociocultural and centred on a celebration of womanhood.
