Uganda: Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died after her boyfriend doused her in petroleum and set the woman on fire. Before the incident, the athlete was in an argument with her boyfriend over a property she had bought recently.

The 33 year old marathon runner has represented Uganda in international athletic and sports events such as the Olympics. The murder attempt happened on Monday and the athlete was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Notably, the boyfriend also sustained some burns and was taken to the same hospital as Cheptegei. The chief medical officer at the hospital confirmed that all the organs of the victim failed and she died while receiving treatment.

The parents of the star athlete have confirmed that she had recently bought some land in Trans Nzoia. She wanted to be near the country’s many athletic training centres to further her career.

The Police officers have started their investigation into the incident and confirmed that the boyfriend brought a can of Patrol. He got into an argument with his partner, Rebecca Cheptegei over the property that she had brought.

The officials have shared that the boyfriend poured the patrol on her and set her on fire during a disagreement. The Ugandan Athletics Federation and the Olympic Committeee of Uganda have called the incident unfortunate and senseless.

The organizations have expressed their condolences on the death of the athlete. Taking to social media, Ugandan Athletics Federation has expressed that they are saddened by the death of the athlete.

The officials have shared that they were disheartened to learn that she fell victim to domestic violence. The federation has also  condemned the accident and called on the police officers to make sure that she gets justice.

On the other hand, Uganda’s Olympic Committee chief, , Donald Rukare called the incident cowardly and senseless. He said that the actions have ledto thee loss of a great athlete for Uganda.

They also noted that her legacy will continue to inspire.
