Botswana: Botswana Police Service (BPS) held a closing ceremony of the Gender Mainstreaming Workshop for Senior Officers yesterday (19/10/2023) in Kanye. The workshop was conducted with a mandate of creating awareness of the importance of gender equality in the workplace.

Officiating at the event, the Divisional Commander South, Senior Assistant Commissioner Harrison Digobe, said the workshop was in compliance with international conventions ratified by Botswana, such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

He explained that the training focused on developing and existing initiatives by BPS on integrating gender equality within the organisation.

Furthermore, Digobe said, the workshop, which was the first and ground breaking training to be held by the Botswana Police Station, was designed to boost gender parity within the organisation.

He further said the officers were capacitated with knowledge, skills and values to contribute to the effective implementation of gender mainstreaming strategies in the organisation and the entire country.

The Divisional Commander further urged other organisations to assess and monitor the implementation of gender mainstreaming and to establish appropriate accountability mechanisms in their entities.

On addressing the Reset Agenda, the Divisional Commander encouraged participants to embrace the government transformation agenda, noting that attaining gender equality required a change in attitude and implementation of various strategies to integrate equal and equitable gender representation within the organisation.

For his part, Station Commander Dukwi Police Station, Superintendent Howard Modo, who was also part of the participants, said the workshop was beneficial to them as it provided a comprehensive understanding of gender mainstreaming.

He advised other participants that as managers at their respective policing establishments, they should treat both genders equally and make informed decisions and policies pertaining to gender equality.

Locals appreciate the government for this development and say, “Good initiative, le gatetse ko pele, and we are really happy to see that development.”
