Cape Town: The City enforcement department arrested 300 suspects this last week for various crimes including drunk driving. The possession of counterfeit money and one man caught red handed while tampering with an electricity box.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Safety and Security – Alderman JP Smith said that it has been a relatively quiet week as many of the crime categories are showing a decrease. The drunk driving arrests remain consistently high and it does not bode well for the end of the month weekend ahead.
The Traffic officers arrested 47 suspects this past week of which 38 were taken in for drunk driving. He highlighted the cause for concern as more than 80% of the arrests are for one crime.
“Across the directorate, they are bracing for a busy weekend ahead as it’s a pay-day weekend. I want to urge the residents and the visitors to take the responsibility for their own safety whether they are on the road or partying at home,” said Alderman Smith.
Reportedly, the Traffic Officers also arrested two motorists for reckless and negligent driving and seven for various other offences. They impounded 137 public transport vehicles, executed 1,804 warrants of arrest and recorded 45,177 offences.
The Law Enforcement officers made 171 arrests for a number of violations that included the possession of drugs, ammunition and dangerous weapons. The arrest also included two men in Voortrekker Road, Goodwood, who concealed 13 bankies of dagga in their clothing.
As per the sources, the Metro Police counterparts arrested 82 suspects and confiscated a number of drugs including 191 mandrax tables, 61 packets of tik, cocaine and khat. The officers were on patrol on Goven Mbeki Drive in Khayelitsha on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, when they spotted a man using a screwdriver and tampering with an electrical box.
A man aged 41 was also arrested for damaging the infrastructure and was detained at Harare South African Police Services (SAPS).
Meanwhile, the officers also arrested a suspect aged 32 on Sunday, June 16 for possession of stolen property, illegal possession of drugs and the possession of counterfeit money in Bellville.
The officers were on patrol in Charl Malan Road when they apprehended a man who ahs tried to flee when he saw them. Upon searching, the officers found R1000 in counterfeit notes, R130 in real notes, 23 mandrax tablets and an iPhone which was stolen. The suspect was arrested and detained at Bellville SAPS.
