Cape Town: City Council approves Universal Access Policy at its meeting on Wednesday, May 28, 2025. The Urban Mobility Directorate of the City of Cape Town is excited about the possibilities the policy offers in removing barriers and working towards the accessible transport system envisioned.
Reportedly, the policy aims to address the accessibility challenges faced by minors, the aged and the pregnant women. This initiative will also make it easy for people living with disabilities, passengers with bags or luggage, and to improve security for all users.

As per the recent update, the Universal Access Policy will guide the teams who deal with the various components of the travel chain to improve accessibility. The upgradations made to transport infrastructure and public transport facilities and services, will be directly controlled by the City of Cape Town.
It will be designed and constructed in a consistent manner city-wide. Over the long-term, this will enable persons with disabilities to navigate the City with more ease.
Considering this, great initiative, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Mobility – Councillor Rob Quintas said that they are committed to keep cape Town moving and improving its accessibility to Cape Town’s transport system for the most vulnerable in the communities is key to this commitment.

Furthermore, the Public transport connects people to social and economic opportunities and needs to be accessible to all the residents. The infrastructure therefore needs to enable independent travel by passengers who depend on universal access. They would further like to thank all the residents and stakeholders who contributed to the draft strategy during the public participation process that was held in November 2024.
The Universal Access Policy is a good step towards helping the people who are not able to cross the road or travel easily. It a great initiative for the people who find it difficult to travel due to some serious conditions or injuries.
