Cape Town: The Human Settlements Directorate of the City of Cape Town has handed over the first 22 homes to beneficiaries and their families at the Edward Avenue Breaking New Ground (BNG) housing project and marked an important milestone in delivering this development.
This is for the first time the homes have been handed over in the Edward Avenue project of the City of Cape Town. It comprises of 124 housing units in total and forms part of the ongoing housing delivery programme of the city.
Handover of the homes represents the first phase of occupation at the site with many further homes to be completed and handed over on a phased basis. Construction of houses is expected to be completed by June 2026 and is subjected to construction conditions.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements – Councillor Carl Pophaim said that the handover of homes reflects progress that is achieved through sustained effort despite the challenges.
He further stated that this handover marks a significant step forward for the Edward Avenue project and the families who are able to move into their homes. The project experienced delays linked to gang violence, extortion and criminal activity which affected the safety of construction teams working on the site.
While giving responding to it, the City of Cape Town has implemented additional interventions to reduce risks and limit further delays. Considering this, Carl Pophaim added that delivery at Edward Avenue will continue as construction progresses.
Over the coming weeks and months, they will continue handing over homes to the remaining approved beneficiaries. The City of Cape Town is committed to complete the project and to advance the housing delivery across the metro.
Councillor Carl Pophaim thanked the Ottery community, Human Settlements officials and all the project partners for their cooperation in reaching this milestone.
Notably, the beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
