Cape Town: The city libraries and recreation facilities are ready to keep learners busy and active during winter school holiday with hundreds of programmes. The annual winter school holiday programme is offered by the Library Information Services and Recreation and Parks Departments, which is set to provide participants with a variety of activities.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Francine Higham said that this holiday is often not seen as fun, because it tends to be cold and wet. The department have it covered and many of the programmes are indoors.
Additionally, there are hundreds of activities that guarantee to chase the winter blues away. The City of Cape Town libraries are gearing up to deliver an exciting line-up of engaging, imaginative holiday adventures that will keep learners inspired.
Alongside the beloved favourites such as cosy indoor board-game corners, spirited chess tournaments and colourful arts and crafts stations, also, the programme of year 2025 will unlock the brand new experiences.
The young creators can sketch their first anime characters with guidance from local illustrators, by building simple games while mastering the basics of coding, step inside a pop-up mini laboratory hosted by the Mobile Science Centre for eye-catching experiments and join lively awareness talks that weave storytelling with real world lessons.
Furthermore, the Recreation and Parks Department has hundreds of programmes running at facilities across Cape Town. The main aim of the programmes is to keep children physically and mentally active during the holidays.
Considering the various parts of the sports, gaming tournaments, dance challenges and board games, many of the activities help participants in building valuable life and social skills such as team-work, communication, leadership and problem-solving, all in a fun and engaging environment.
Francine Higham stated that these programmes also provide a safe sapce for children to participate in societal activities and enhance their cultural awareness. It is more than just keeping children busy and the staff putting a lot of time and effort into the holiday calendar.
She said, “I want to encourage parents and guardians to send their children as it is an opportunity to help them continue learning in a fun way.” Each facility runs their own set of activities, so not all programmes are available in one place.
