Cape Town, South Africa: The City of Cape Town asked the citizens and businesses to have their leaking taps or water fixtures repaired. The officials have also asked the locals to use water wisely in the summer season so they don’t get to face a shortage of water.
Water is a resource that must be valued and not be wasted during hot days. Fixing the leakages, sticking to rules and regulations, and using water wisely outside the home are some necessary ways to save water.
The Water and Sanitation team of Cape Town always keeps a regular check on water use and dam levels for the whole year. The residents of the city themselves take several initiatives to use water mindfully.
Currently, it is important for everyone to be ‘water-wise’. There is no immediate cause for concern to perceive water security in Cape Town as the level of the dam has reached 93.1%.
The officials have urged the people to set a proactive water-saving target for the next rainy season. Last year, the locals were asked to use at least 950 million litres per day.
Previously, the main reasons for the occurrence of water scarcity during the summers were:
- Water used for garden irrigation
- Topping up swimming pools
- Use of water by people outside their home
MMC of Water and Sanitation – City of Cape Town, Dr Zahid Badroodien, has asked all to continue to do the right thing and be water-wise, not only during summer but all year round, regardless of the season and status of the dams.
Many citizens have showcased their concern and reacted to the post shared by the official social media page of the ‘City of Cape Town’.
A user, Sam Payne, commented, “With the influx of semigration, tourists… more attention is needed…there are numerous leaks along Clifton Victoria road that could be mistaken for mountain water…city of cape town need more check, especially at fire hydrants ports”
Another local, Carol Sinclair, wrote, “All Capetonians & visitors alike need to be WATER WISE no matter the season or the state of our dams. All forms of life depend on water.”
Digby Thomson expressed his concern and reacted, “The city is wasting our water owing to innumerable water leaks all over the peninsula being left unattended for days at a time and not being able to close the valves to massive leaks quickly enough. The leak in Green Point today, gushing thousands of tons out to sea, is a case in point! Who pays for the city’s wastage?”
Earlier, the water and sanitation department advised a planned water supply maintenance in Claremont, Newlands and Rondebosch, beginning from 19 to 21 December 2023.
