Cape Town: The Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF) in partnership with the City of Cape Town is ready to advance the health of animals and communities. It was started in 2013, when 1800 pets were sterilized in Dunoon and Brown’s Farm.
Since then, the campaign has benefitted pets in Khayelitsha, Wesbank, Atlantis, Wallacedene, Tafelsig, the Deep South, Macassar and Eerste River. Till now, the City of Cape Town has made available R850,000 in funding for the latest campaign in sub-councils 4 and 6.
Reportedly, the project is funded by the City of Cape Town for the past 12 years, that will take place in sub-councils 4 and 6 this year. The project will also include areas like Ravensmead, Elsies River and Bellville South. Since 2013, 17,876 animals have been sterilized at a cost of nearly R8 million.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councilllor Francine Higham said that the City of Cape Town is very proud to continue this long-standing relationship with the partners in the animal welfare sector.
According to Higham, so much good work has happened over the last 12 years, and they are looking forward to yet another successful mass sterilization campaign. She said, “Thank you so much to all of the member organizations who continue to lend their support to this initiative, and their commitment to make it a success.”
However, six registered animal welfare organizations will collectively sterilize 1500 domestic pets between August 2025 and December 2025.
This project aims to:
- Prevent unwanted litters
- Minimize the incidence of animal cruelty and abuse
- Improve general standards of animal health and husbandry, thereby improving the health and welfare of people
- Encourage responsible pet care and ownership through humane education
Chairperson of CAWF – Karen de Klerk said that in 2025 they are celebrating 13 years of MASP and send grateful thanks to the City of Cape Town for their continued support.
Notably, this campaign is a positive intervention in support of healthier communities and will substantially reduce the instance of unwanted litter. Thus, it will reduce the heavy burden placed on welfare organizations around the Metropole.
