Zimbabwe: Legislator of the opposition party Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) for the Mt Pleasant constituency – Fadzayi Mahere, gave her resignation from parliament in solidarity with party ex-leader Nelson Chamisa, who resigned last week.
Reportedly, Chamisa stepped down as party leader of the CCC last week and left the nation suspicious, guessing about his next political move.
The resignation of Chamisa followed the intense leadership quarrels in the party and who pitied him. Along with the leader Chamisa, the interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu of CCC was also contradicted.
The conflicts among the party led to the recall of many party legislators and local council representatives.
Moreover, this paved the way for by-elections, some of which have already been held and others which are yet to be conducted.
Making a statement on her resignation, legislator Fadzayi Mahere said that she had submitted her resignation to the Speaker of Parliament – Advocate Jacob Mudenda, today and is formally quitting her legislative position.
According to the sources, she is the first CCC legislator to step down in solidarity with Chamisa, who, while quitting the party, has alleged that “It has now been contaminated, bastardised, and hijacked.”
Former CCC legislator Mahere also claimed that the party had been compromising in the squabbles and is not at all respect its founding democratic principles and values.
Considering her resignation, Mahere also shared an official letter on her ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) account that says it was with immediate effect.
While sharing the letter Fadzayi Mahere wrote, “Thank You, Mt Pleasant Constituency for having faith in me. Despite feeling a profound sense of sadness for all I had hoped we could do together to build a pleasant Mt Pleasant, I have officially submitted by resignation from Parliament and will cease to be member of CCC.”
In the official resignation letter two clauses were added. The first clause reads, “I confirm that I was sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Mt Pleasant Constituency on the 7th of September 2023 under the Citizens’ Coalition for Change political party.”
The second clause reads, “I hereby tender written notice of my resignation from Parliament with immediate effect in accordance with section 129 (1) (b) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.”
