Chief Chamuka pledges to end child marriages, Gender Based Violence

The traditional leaders in Zambia are committed to ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and child marriages, claimed Chief Chamuka.

Zambia: The traditional leaders in Zambia are committed to ending Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and child marriages. The traditional leader of the Chisamba district Chief Chamuka has pledged to work on the eradication of these social evils.

Further, the traditional leaders of the country have taken the lead in the protection of their subjects. In line with this,  Chief Chamuka also thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for leading in the fight towards ending child marriages.

The President of Zambia and his team have been working hard to educate the communities and discourage them from participating in this derogatory practice.

The traditional leader made these remarks during his meeting with the visiting United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Director for Africa and Assistant Secretary General Ahunna Eziakonwa. She was on a trip to Zambia and interacted with several high-level government officials on the issue.

The Assistant Secretary General also called on Chief Chamuka at his palace in Chisamba district. The United Nations Organization has been working with the administrations of developing and underdeveloped countries to discourage such practices.

Chief Chamuka announced that he is pleased to work with the United Nations. They are making remarkable strides in championing the fight against child marriages in Zambia.

He thanked Eziakonwa for choosing to visit Chamuka Chiefdom. He also appreciated the strides it is making in addressing GBV and child marriages.

Meanwhile, Eziakonwa, in her remarks, appreciated the traditional leader for his work. She said that she was pleased to learn that Chief Chamuka was instrumental in championing the fight against child marriages and ending GBV.

She stated that traditional leaders are key partners in promoting gender inclusion. Eziakonwa shared that it was delightful to see Chief Chamuka working closely with the UN to address social ills.

The UN representative believes that culture can positively impact society and promote human dignity and decency. Eziakonwa informed the traditional leader that the UN will further explore ways to collaborate.
