Chinamee Citahigadoo joins centenarian club

Chinamee Citahigadoo is the newest addition to the list of centenarians of Mauritius. The government celebrated the occasion with her family

Zambia: Chinamee Citahigadoo is the newest addition to the list of centenarians of Mauritius. The government of Mauritius celebrated the occasion through the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity.

The ministry hosted an official ceremony to celebrate the milestone with the newest centenarian. The family of the 100-year-old was also present at the celebration alongside the government officials. The ceremony was hosted on April 1, to commemorate Citahigadoo’s 100th birthday at Domaine Kamellia, in Chemin Grenier.

Notably, the event was even more special as she is the first centenarian of the month of April in 2024. The officials of the government attended the event and presented the 100 year old with many gifts and honors.

The officials have shared the images from the ceremony and shared that the newest centenarian is a delight to be around. One of the attendants of the event included  the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Mr Alan Ganoo.

The other government officials and relatives of the woman of the hour were present. The government of Malawi gave the centenarian a cheque amounting to Rs 26, 203.

The cheque was also accompanied by a bouquet, a centenarian medal and a certificate. The newest addition to the centenarian club also received a rice cooker from the government representatives.

The Mauritius Telecom Company also gave her a special telephone for her own to use. Further, the Senior Citizens Council gave her a special gift to make her day more special.

Finally, the National Solidarity Fund gave her a cheque to the tune of Rs 10, 000. The government also shared a brief account of her life.

She was born on April 1, 1924 and never had a formal education. Her father, Akhana Apaya, was an overseer at Beau Vallon Sugar Estate and mother a housewife.

She was married off to her husband Bala Citahigadoo at the age of 14 after which she was blessed with two children. She came from a family of three children, including two girls and a boy. Her siblings have passed away.

Further, her husband also died at the age of 55, at the time she was only 49 years old. She took care of her two children single-handedly after her husband’s death.
