Chinese nationals nabbed in Chikwawa for assaulting employee

Police in Chikwawa district has arrested two Chinese nationals for assaulting their employee believing he had stolen fuel from a machine.

Malawi: Police in Chikwawa district have arrested two Chinese nationals for assaulting their employee. The suspects believed that the said employee was guilty of stealing fuel from them, which led to his assault.

The suspects have been identified as 37-year-old Allen Cheng and 35-year-old Peng Yongqia, respectively. Meanwhile, the police force has also identified the victim as 37-year-old Silaj Maluwa, a resident of Sadulo Village.

The victim works with the Chinese nationals as a machine operator at Sinohydro Construction Company. According to the police reports, the incident happened on April 14 when the victim was at his workplace.

The victim was at a canal construction site, part of the Shire Valley Transformation project when the suspects accused him of stealing fuel. The suspects alleged that their employee had taken the fuel from the machine he was working on.

This led to the victim being assaulted by his employers. The Police force of Chikwawa district has started an investigation into the matter. The district Deputy Public Relations Officer, Constable Chancy Mfune, shared the individuals’ identities.

He also shared that the victim was a resident of the Sadulo Village under Traditional Authority (TA) Katunga in Chikwawa. The victim was discovered unconscious by some of his colleagues after he had been assaulted. The colleagues revealed that they found him along the earth road connecting to the camp where he works.

Afterward, they rushed him to the Chikwawa District Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and being hospitalized. The doctors who are treating the victim reported that he had sustained a fracture in his left arm.

The Police Public Relations officer added that Chikwawa Police’s Criminal Investigation Department conducted preliminary investigations. The two suspects have been arrested after the preliminary investigation concluded.

The officials have shared that the suspects remain in Police custody and will face charges of Acts Intended to Cause Grievous Harm in court soon.
