Cape Town: The Corporate Services Directorate of the City of Cape Town hosted a successful Career Expo at the Delft Civic Centre on Friday, April 17, 2026. The event drew an impressive total of 649 attendees. This also included 542 learners and 48 unemployed youth and highlighted the strong demand for access to career guidance, skills development and employment opportunities within local communities.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate Services – Alderman Theresa Uys stated that the City of Cape Town plays a leading role in education and training in the Western Cape. They employ over 30,000 staff members and believe it as part of the solution to the many problems faced by the communities, from drug abuse to crime, lies in creating learning and employment opportunities for youth and job seekers.
According to Uys, youth deserve to be provided with a chance to study and then gain valuable work experience, the City of Cape Town has invested over R186,487,405.41 million into their own workplace skills, that plan this year in order to address these two goals and to build a solid and equitable pipeline of promotion that benefits the most vulnerable employees and residents.
The Career Expo, observed on Friday in Delft, brought together learners from ten schools across the province; namely:
- Delft High School
- Leiden High School
- Simunye Secondary School
- Manzomthombo High School
- Malibu High School
- Mfuleni Technical Academy
- Rosendaal Secondary School
- Soneike High School
- Mfuleni Secondary School
- Westbank High School
A wide range of external stakeholders contributed to the event’s success, by including higher education institutions, SETAs, government departments, and private sector organisations. Internal City departments present included Human Resources, Law Enforcement, Fire Services, SmartCape, Water and Sanitation, EPWP and CDW, Library and Information Services, and Traffic Services.
The Corporate Services Career Expos form part of the City’s broader strategy to equip young people with the knowledge, resources, and opportunities that is needed to succeed in a competitive job market. By connecting learners and job seekers with industry leaders and training providers, the City continues to build a strong pipeline of future talent while addressing unemployment and social challenges.
Alderman Theresa Uys further stated that as a caring City, they are focused on creating more opportunities for the young leaders of tomorrow. To foster economic growth, they need to see more young people lift themselves out of poverty. Everything they do over the next five years is geared towards this outcome.
Today they offer students and unemployed youth much-needed learning and employment opportunities, as they know that there are so many young people who are struggling to get a job and who do not have money to study further.
Earlier this month, on Friday, April 09, 2026, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme, in collaboration with the Conray Marcus Youth Development, successfully hosted a well-attended Career Exhibition at the Wynberg Civic Centre. The event welcomed learners from Wittebome Senior Secondary Focus College, Wynberg Senior Secondary, Immaculata Roman Catholic Girls High School, Dominican School for the Deaf, Paramount High School, Oracle Academy and Darus Na’im High School.
