Cape Town: The Corporate Services and Human resources Directorate of the City of Cape Town has successfully implemented numerous training interventions that benefited their Service and Sales Workers, Clerks, Technicians and Associated Professionals, other Professionals, Craft and Related Trade Workers, Elementary Occupations as well as Plant and Machine operators.
In total, 211 apprentice opportunities and 1470 external learnership opportunities were created, at the end of December 2024. The City of Cape Town further has 34 active Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) graduates within its ranks.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Corporate Services – Alderman Theresa Uys said that a City of Hope for all is the vision and the City of Cape Town is committed to skills development and the creation of opportunities for youth, as well as any eager-to-learn city staff members and residents.
Considering the last year, City of Cape Town has managed to train 9,567 employees across various training interventions. This is a remarkable feat which ensures that the staff members are empowered with new skills to keep on rendering services of value to the residents.
Notably, the City of Cape Town has actively participated in the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) Programme since the 2014-15 financial year, funded by the National Treasury. This is a three-year programme that aims to address scarce skills within municipalities across South Africa by training and mentoring graduates to achieve professional registration with their respective statutory councils.
The key focus areas of ISDG graduates include Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Regional and Town Planning as well as Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This year, in 2025, one of the Chemical Engineering graduates has been permanently placed at the City of Cape Town.
According to Alderman Theresa Uys, the ISDG programme plays a vital role in equipping graduates, who received training with specific scarce skills and acquired abilities and knowledge related to this. She promised that they would empower youngsters, who signed three-year contracts that lay the foundation for them, in order to register with statutory councils and bodies such as ECSA, SAGC, SACNASP and SACPLAN.
