City of Cape Town urged residents to participate in cleaning up the beaches ahead of the ‘International Coastal Clean-up Day’ on September 21, 2024. They insisted to work together to reduce the pollution and keep the environment healthy.

Considering, the ‘Spring Clean CT campaign’, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Urban Waste Management – Alderman Grant Twigg, hosted a beach clean-up at the Lagoon Beach in Milnerton ahead of the International Coastal Clean-up Day, on September 16, 2024.

The clean-up day will be celebrated on Saturday, September 21, 2024, which will be observed on the side-line of the International Solid Waste Association World Congress 2024, at CTICC over the coming days.

Reportedly, the Lagoon Beach clean-up runs in conjunction with the start of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) 2024 Conference in Cape Town from September 15 to 18, 2024.

The Lagoon Beach clean-up runs in conjunction with the start of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) 2024 Conference in Cape Town from 15 to 18 September. The ISWA World Congress is the foremost event, held in the field of solid waste management and it serves as a global assembly. It featured the elevated plenary sessions, technical site visits and a rich cultural and social itinerary too.

As per the sources, the clean-up was joined by a number of volunteers, that included Save A Fishie, The Litter Boom Project and Cape Town Tourism. The main idea behind this event is to go to a local beach with a garbage bag and start picking up waste to reduce the amount that would be swept into the ocean by water or wind.

Alderman Grant Twigg said that with the beach clean-up project, they want to strive to raise awareness regarding the increasing pollution on beaches around the world and restore purity and cleanliness to the environment in which they live.

According to Twigg, the clean-up is even more important after the recent storms experienced in Cape Town as anything that is placed in the ocean and other water bodies will find its way back. This is a great time to clean-up the beach.

“Moreover, to help the environment, I want to motivate other communities to organise similar clean-ups and make beach cleaning days enjoyable events that will inspire more people to take action to maintain a clean, safe and healthy environment for aquatic fauna and flora and marine species,” said Alderman Grant Twigg.
