Cape Town: Heavy rainfall that the city received in past few days has affected around 170 people and has damaged 43 structures. The downpour has harmed a lot of people as it made them lost their homes.
City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson – Sonica Lategan assured people that the officials are conducting the required assessments to determine the damages.
Lategan told further that around 43 structures had been flooded in Vygieskraal and affected 170 people. Including this, flooding was also reported at a block of flats in Tableview and another in Sea Point.
Sonica added to her statement and said that the reports have been received by her, related to two structures in Kalk Bay at Godfrey Road, which is completely surrounded by the mud. The Roads and Stormwater Maintenance Department has been activated to provide the plastic sheeting and sandbags to these areas.
As per the sources, the department on Wednesday also received reports of sewers overflowing in the Overcome Heights area which is affecting the seven homes built there.
Moreover, people or NGOs are coming forward to extend help in every possible way they can. One such organisation ‘Gift of the Givers’ has donated blankets to those who got affected or were harmed.
Considering this the project manager – Ali Sablay said that the organisation received calls from mostly low-lying areas and places which were on the wetlands.
He added that so far, nothing major has been reported that compared to the previous heavy rainfall we have had in the province. He confirmed that our teams are on standby in the Garden Route as well in case, if something major happens. The volunteers were on put standby and should the situation be worsened.
The South African Weather Service warned all on Thursday morning, over an intense cold front that is being headed for the Western Cape, and is expected to hit on Sunday, July 07 and Monday, July 08.
Notably, the public and smallholder farmers are advised to beware of heavy downpours, snowfalls as well as Very cold conditions, strong coastal and interior with the winds and rough seas.
