Africa (Mpumalanga): The Arts Careers Day was held under the theme “Unlocking the Wealth in Our Heritage” and aimed to expose learners, students, and out-of-school youth to careers available in the heritage arts industry.
The exposure was directed to high school learners and students in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges and Universities.
Learners from various schools in the area have attended the event. Universities and TVET colleges showcased their offerings in various fields.
There was a workshop of educators on career guidance for the Heritage Career Expo. Educators awarded ‘Certificate of Recognition’ which was handed over by Deputy Minister Buti Manamela with Vice-Chancellor of University of Mpumalanga Prof Thoko Mayekiso and Deputy Minister in the Presidency Ms Thembi Siweya.
Other exhibitors included a showcase of digital art as well as interior design by the Tshwane University of Technology.
Art Focused Careers Expo is part of Heritage Careers Expo. The Expo is an initiative of the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation to expose learners to creative arts and heritage careers.
The Expo takes place in different provinces over two months. It was launched at Motheo TVET College in May 2022. The project partnered with professionals in the industry as part of the Expo to share real-world experiences and industry insights with learners.
Along with Zoe Modiga, Gregory Maqoma, Bongiwe Walaza, and Napo Masheane, Noria Mabasa is one of the master champions for the 2022 Expo. Over the past few months, the master champions have visited schools in KZN, Free State, Limpopo, Gauteng and now Mpumalanga.
“Young people need not overlook the opportunities vocational careers present. Heritage and cultural sectors provide numerous employment opportunities. An upskilled youth is an employable youth. Our SETA partners hold the key to unlocking unemployment through the varied opportunities available,” said Manamela.
