Cape Town: Diphtheria outbreak in the regions signified the importance of timely vaccinations. Health Department of City of Cape Town appealed to parents to make sure that the vaccination for their child on priority and they have mentioned it in their to-do list before schools re-open.
Reportedly, the City Health has surpassed the national target of 85% with a 95% vaccination rate for children of under one year. The recent concern of the officials was rise in diphtheria cases that has once again highlighted the need to ensure that every child is fully vaccinated.
Health Department of City of Cape Town urged all parents and caregivers to prioritise the childhood immunisations to protect themselves and their children against preventable diseases and curb the risk of outbreaks. Recently the staff has also conducted a number of outreaches to ramp up the vaccination rates.

Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Services and Health – Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said that she is pleased that they are achieving the immunisation targets. She explained that it is critical to maintain and even improve the coverage to better protect the vulnerable groups in the communities.
Ross mentioned that the recent increase in diphtheria cases is a serious concern. Diphtheria is a preventable but life-threatening disease and ensures that every child is vaccinated and is critical to safeguard their health and the well-being of the communities.
As per the sources, soon the children will be back at school and creche, where they will come into contact with other children. She added further to her statement that they have a duty. They want to ensure that each and every child is protected by keeping up to date with their vaccination schedule.
According to Patricia Van der Ross, if the child has missed any vaccination, it is requested to them that they should visit their nearest City Health Clinic without any further delay.
